Distorted Perception of Weight - Anorexia

Anorexia is a disease which affects mostly women, but men can also fall trapped in this disease. Because anorexia nervosa can cause even death, it is very important to get help. Find out more about this dangerous disease.

People, especially women have always had to confront themselves with weight problems. Some people are satisfied with their body even though they are overweight or too thin while some people face a more difficult matter, distorted perception of weight.

This condition can affect both men and women, but it is however a more common problem for women. Women who have a distorted perception of their weight see themselves more fat than they actually are. They can look in the mirror and see something most people don't see. They consider themselves to be fat and unattractive, triggering eating disorders.

No matter how much weight is lost, the person still sees the same overweight body in the mirror. Because this happens only in the persons mind it is considered to be a psychiatric illness. Women who suffer from anorexia also known as anorexia nervosa are always trying to control their weight by starvation, excessive exercising, abuse of diet pills and laxatives.

If the illness doesn't receive necessary treatment it can lead to severe health problems even death.

Anorexia can lead to amenorrhea which is the absence of periods for women and impotence for men. Anorexic people usually deny their problem and will not accept that they have a problem if confronted.

Here are some tips to help you spot anorexic behavior:

  • refusal to eat

  • purging which means the person will eat small amounts of food and then induce vomiting, use laxatives and enemas to get the food out of their body

  • excessive exercising

  • obsessiveness about their weight

  • constant fear of gaining weight even though most people are underweight

  • rapid weight loss

  • absence of menstrual cycle

  • impotence and lack of sexual interest for men

  • paleness, tooth decay and thinning of the hair due to lack of nutrients necessary for the body to function properly

  • anemia



  • The people who are usually affected by anemia are people with low self esteem, depressed people or people who have phobias about gaining weight.
    This condition can be caused by genetic factors, psychological factors and social factors.

    People who suffer from anorexia need to get immediate medical help from a physician, psychologist or psychiatrist. The condition can be treated especially if it is discovered on time.
